Haritaki is a herb known for its plethora of benefits, which is why Haritaki is prized as ‘King of Medicines’. Haritaki is cultivated from the Terminalia chebula tree. This dried fruit is also called Chebulic myrobalan, which is used to form the Triphala due to its potent rejuvenative. Ayurveda strongly advocates the use of Haritaki due to its potent astringent, purgative, anti-bilious, laxative, and antioxidant properties for the treatment of various health anomalies.

Synonym 

Haritaki being used for a long time in ayurvedic practice, which is why Ayurveda mentioned numerous names in the textbooks like Harade in Hindi, Kadukkai in Tamil, Karakkaya in Telugu. Some other names of Haritaki are Terminalia chebula, Myrobalan, Abhaya, Kayastha, Hirdo, Alalekai, Katukka, Hirda, Harida, Halela, Hardi, Harara, Shilikha, Ordo, Prapathya, Jaya, Avyatha, Hemvati, Vaystha, Shiva, Shreyashi, Pranda, Nandini and Pathya. 

Identification

Haritaki cultivated from Terminalia chebula tree, which belongs to Combretaceae family, a family of tropical shrubs and trees (order Myrtales) with usually entire often terminal leaves, mostly perfect flowers with 4 to 6 ovules, and a single-celled indehiscent fruit. Terminalia chebula is a medium to a large deciduous tree (trees and shrubs that seasonally shed leaves) growing to 30 m tall, with a trunk of 1 m in diameter. This tree has alternatively arranged oval leaves and dull yellow whitish flowers, and a robust acrid smell. Fruit is ovoid drupe-shaped and Yellow to orange-brown.

Distribution

Terminalia chebula is native to South and Southeast Asia, including India, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, and Thailand. In India, Haritaki is found in the Himalayan region from Ravi eastwards to West Bengal and Assam, ascending to 1,500 m in the Himalayas. This tree is wild in Northern India, central provinces, and Bengal, typical in Madras, Mysore, and the southern part of the Bombay presidency.

Types/Varieties of Haritaki

There are seven different types of Haritaki according to their physical attributes and therapeutic attributes described in classical texts of Ayurveda.

Vijaya Haritaki 

Vijaya has the shape of a gourd and cures most ailments. Vijaya Haritaki found on Vindhya Mountains.

Chetaki Haritaki

Chetaki has three ridges of fruit. Chetaki Haritaki is used for purgation and Found in the Himalayas and Himachal Pradesh. 

Rohini Haritaki

Putna Haritaki

Abhaya Haritaki

Abhaya contains five ridges and is used for treating vision problems and is found in Champa (Chhattisgarh region) region.

Amrita Haritaki

This variety has a thick fruit pulp which has Panchkarma property and is helpful as purgative. This variety is found in the Champa Bhagalpur region.

Make a paste of Haritaki by boiling dried Haritaki into a tea and later cool the paste and use it as an eyewash or cleanser to eliminate various eye infections and vision disorders. 
Pack a paste of a spoonful of Haritaki powder, ½ spoon of freshly squeezed aloe vera gel, two drops of almond oil and slowly massage it around your eyes in a circular motion and let us set for 15 minutes and wash off with cool water. Apply some moisturizer to keep the skin underneath the eyes supple. Use this pack thrice a week to remove dark circles.

Side effects of Haritaki

Overconsumption without consulting an Ayurvedic doctor might cause diarrhea, stomatitis, dehydration, acute fever, malnutrition, stiffness of the jaw, fatigue. If the skin is hypersensitive, then one should use the Haritaki paste with coconut oil with doctor consultation.
